Alexia

My name is Alexia Smith and this is my story. At almost twenty years old, my life was very out of order. I was lost and looking for love in all the wrong places. I then found out I was having a child and was very scared. Although I didn’t think I could handle the day-to-day aspects of being a mom, I still wanted to be a mom. I thought about abortion, but knew in my heart that was not for me. Then, while looking through the phonebook, I found the IAC and the words “Open Adoption.” This is when everything started to make sense. From the first time I contacted them I was told, “if you want to keep your baby, we will help. If you are not ready, we will find someone who is.” The IAC gave me the opportunity to choose a family and still see my baby and watch him grow up always knowing me as his birthmom.

The IAC was helpful to the very end. My counselor came to the hospital when I had the baby and did not leave my side until we signed all the paperwork. They helped me find a true gift from God in the family I chose. I look forward to the IAC picnic every year that many IAC families go to. And, to any new families: thank you for taking the time to read my story and hope to see you at next year’s picnic!
