Breaking the News

Getting pregnant is very personal. And, if you didn’t want to get pregnant or were not planning on getting pregnant anytime soon, the situation becomes even more personal and breaking the news to your loved ones can be awkward and even terrifying.

All IAC birthmothers have unique situations. The Independent Adoption Center has talked with women of many ages with all different kinds of personalities who are in varying types of romantic relationships and have different levels of comfortability or closeness with their friends and family.

If you’re not sure what to do, call a counselor to talk it over. You can go over your situation with your counselor and they will help you sort through your options. It’s common that we hear, “My dad is going to kill me” or “nobody’s going to understand.” Remember, this is all up to you. Your counselor will not pressure you into doing anything you’re not comfortable with; they will just listen to you and help you lay out all the realistic scenarios. They will also be there to for you so that you can let it all out when you’re feeling stressed.

If you do decide that becoming an IAC birthmother is right for you, your counselor will walk you through how to break the news to your family or even make the phone call for you.
